Mr. Jerry Joyner

Mr. Jerry Edward Joyner departed this earthly life and entered eternal rest peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Hampton VA Medical Center.

Jerry was born on June 18, 1959, in Newport News, Virginia, to the late John and Lucy Joyner. He was educated in the Newport News Public School System and graduated from Ferguson High School in 1977.

In 1984, Jerry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country for nine years. During his military service, he earned a Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, two Good Conduct Medals, and a Certificate of Commendation in recognition of his dedication and exemplary service. In 1985, Jerry welcomed his only child, Jennifer Ashley Joyner. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1993.

Following his military service, Jerry was employed by Newport News Shipbuilding, where he worked for more than five years. In 2000, he began his career with the Hampton VA Medical Center, faithfully serving veterans and his community for 26 years. He retired on May 1, 2026. Throughout his career, Jerry touched the lives of countless people through his kindness, unwavering work ethic, and willingness to help others.

Above all else, Jerry cherished his family. His daughter and three grandchildren were the center of his world. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sharing home-cooked meals, watching football, and simply enjoying the fellowship of "the guys." Jerry had a warm spirit, an infectious smile, and a generous heart that made everyone feel welcome in his presence.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy Joyner; his sister, Patricia Joyner; and his brother, James Joyner, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving daughter, Miss Jennifer Joyner; his beloved grandchildren, Jasir Willis, Jordyn Joyner, and Rishawn "SJ" Brown, Jr.; his brothers, Michael Joyner (Ida), Ricky Joyner (Stephanie), David Joyner, and Donnie Joyner; his sisters, Doris Joyner and Bettina Harris (Kyle); his bonus nephew, Carl Hudson, who held a special place in his heart; his very special friends, Calvin Knight, Wynella Abrams, Plummer Jones, Carl Johnston, Larry Dodson, Reginald Carter, Miriam Harrison, Patricia Rivers, and Terri "Cricket" Davis; his special cousins, Tiffany Jones, Erica Solomon, Aleta Solomon, Jeff Solomon, and Robin Jones; the entire Jones family, who were especially dear to him; and Larry Harrison, Jr., whom Jerry affectionately referred to as "the son I never had." He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Jerry's legacy of love, service, strength, and unwavering devotion to his family will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. Though he is no longer with us in body, his gentle spirit, quiet strength, and lasting impact will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched. His memory will forever be a blessing, and he will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
