On January 7, 2021 at 6:11pm, the Lord sent an angel to his child, Jerome Dawson that said, it is time to come home to be with the Lord. Jerome Ivan Dawson aka “Big Dawson” as he was affectionately known, was born on October 2, 1955 to the late Jessie Lee Dawson and the late Simon Theodore Douglas, in Newport News, Virginia. Jerome was raised by his mother, Ms. Jessie Dawson and his Aunt & Uncle, the late France and Willie Douglas. He was educated by the Newport News Public School District, and graduate from Warwick High School in the class of 1975.
He was very athletic and a member of the varsity football team in which he excelled on the field while playing the position of defensive linemen. Although football became his first love, he also excelled on the track team, throwing the shot put and discus. Immediately, after high school, Jerome started working for the Peninsula Health Department, where he served as a medical courier for 5 years (1975-1980). In 1980, Jerome accepted a position as a rigger with Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock, Company and after, 27 years of service in the Riggers Department X-53, he would go on and retire in 2007 when his health was met with some challenges.
This retirement time allowed Jerome to do what he loved best and that was working on vehicles. He was really blessed with the gift of automotive repairs and would use this gift to bless others. Also, during his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, watching drag racing, participating in church activities, spending time with family and last but not least, rooting for the Dallas Cowboys as he was an avid fan. If you knew him way back when, then you know he loved playing horseshoes; won many trophies as a softball player, DJ’d many parties in the 70’s 80’s, enjoyed playing with mechanical gadgets and was a big “Star Wars”-Sci-Fi fan.
In 1982, Jerome accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, at the St. John’s Church of God in Christ, under the mentorship, of the late, Bishop, Samuel L. Green, Jr, for many years. He would later attend Way of The Cross Church, 48th Street, N.N. under the leadership of Bishop Jackson. While serving, in these ministries, he used his gifts, talents and treasures to bring others to Christ. In 2016, he because a member of Temple of Peace Ministry under the leadership of the Reverend, Karen Wilson. Many of us who really knew him would refer to him as a “Biblical Scholar” because of his love of studying the Bible and sharing God’s Word.
Jerome was preceded in death by his father Simeon Theodore Douglas, mother, Jessie Lee Dawson, Aunts, Virginia Smith, Aunt, Frances Douglas, Uncle, Luther Douglas and A Special Cousin, Gerri Hollins.
