James M. Cowan, was born to the late George E. Cowan and Gertrude Boone on August 13, 1946, in South Carolina. Affectionately known as “Pie”, he quietly slipped into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia,
Pie grew up in South Carolina where he graduated from Southwestern High School in 1964. He relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where he began his career, on June 9, 1974, at the Newport News Shipyard. He worked there for over 40 years and retired in August, 2011, with a smile on his face. Also, after relocating to Newport News, Pie later joined the Macedonia Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia. He was a dedicated member and served diligently on the Transportation and Hospitality Ministries.
Pie was a flashy dresser and he loved his shoes and his Corvette. He was also a member of the Motorcycle Club. Pie was a gentle giant and he loved his family very much.
In addition to his parents, Pie was preceded in death by his son, James M. Cowan, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories his fiancé, Ithrow “Bit” Hill of Hampton, Virginia; four daughters; Lisa Folk-Thomas of Bronx, New York, Jennifer Taylor of Brooklyn, New York, Erica Powell-Wilson of Chesapeake, Virginia and Shakakia Hill of Richmond, Virginia; two sons, Edward Durant of Charlotte, North Carolina and Barry Hill of Richmond, Virginia; one brother, Randolph Cowan of Newport News, Virginia; two sisters, Eunice Williams and Malois Harmon of Brooklyn, New York; nine granddaughters, Tara, Niaia, Dorqulia, Kiara, Diahj, Nikyia, Briaunna, Jalisa and Kimberly; ten grandsons, Anthony, Diondre, Lavelle, Marquise, Jordan, Christian, Jerod Jr., Barry Jr., Khalil, and Kamaal; three great-granddaughters, Shayanne, Malayiah, Aneesa; seven great-grandsons, Juelle, Christopher, Jr., Zyquise, Zeland, Kamari, Cam’ron and Cayseon; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends whom he truly loved.
Viewing for Mr. Cowan will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Macedonia Baptist Church, 5500 Marshall Avenue, Newport News, Virginia 23605.
Services for Mr. Cowan are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Macedonia Baptist Church by Pastor John A. Wilson.
Disposition will be held privately for the family.
