Born to John and Yvette Baker on May 29,1948. Raised in Newport News, VA., he was educated in the local school district.
James was a friend to everyone and often left a lasting impression on those he met. His awesome sense of humor often brought laughter to those around him.
Known for his avid love of clothes and with his fashion sense, he was considered a “Cool Dude” and often referred to himself as an “Old Playa”.
Retired from MCV hospital after 18 years as a Supply Officer in the central Supply Service, and soon after began a part-time job at the Lotto building in Richmond.
One of his favorite things to do was to sit on the porch and monitor the neighborhood, gaining him the title “Mayor of Idlewood”.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Yvette Baker and his older brother, John S. Baker. Those left to cherish his memory are 2 sons, Jermaine Hargraves of Washington D.C. and Ryan Peade (Latasha) of Hampton, VA., 3 grandsons, Jahjuan, Ja’wan, and Jahkai, 2 granddaughters, Janai and Rian, and 1 great granddaughter, and a favorite cousin Bland Lewis (Jackie) of Hampton.
A special loss is felt by his longtime, dear friend and companion, Sharilyn Robinson (Dolly).
He will be greatly missed.
