“There’s a path that goes beyond our world where Yahuah will take our hand and set us free, to live with HIM in HIS eternal land. May it bring you comfort to know your loved one’s there and whose kingdom is protected by His care.”
On December 21, 1958, in Salters Creek, Newport News, Virginia, Gregory Steven Harris was born to Clarence Wesley Harris and Dolores Costello Lewis. To those who knew and loved him, Greg was much more than his given name—he was affectionately called “G Man.” His presence, laughter, and generous spirit left a lasting mark on every life he touched.
Greg transitioned from this earthly life on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the age of 66. He was welcomed into eternity by his father, Clarence “Sing” Harris, his loving mother Dolores, his sister Torri, and Mama Una, who all preceded him in death.
Greg grew up surrounded by the warmth of family and the close-knit community of Salters Creek. He attended George Wythe Elementary School and graduated from Hampton High School in 1977. In 1981, with a heart of courage and service, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he worked in Food Service.
His service took him around the world, and one of his most cherished memories was his time spent in Stuttgart, Germany. While serving his country, Greg earned several honors and commendations, including the Marksman Badge, M-16 Rifle Expert, Hand Grenade, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. He carried the pride of his military service with him for the rest of his life.
After returning home, Greg poured his talents and leadership into food service, continuing a career that would impact countless lives. He worked in several establishments, but his time as Food Service Director at Hampton University was one of his greatest professional joys. He loved working with people, mentoring others, and sharing his passion for excellence in every kitchen he led.
Beyond his career, Greg was a man of many passions. He was a natural athlete—whether playing football, basketball, or boxing, he gave his all. In later years, golf became his favorite pastime, a game that brought him peace, challenge, and fellowship with friends. He was also a dedicated member of the Elks fraternal organization and the local Freemasonry chapter, where he found brotherhood, service, and a deep sense of community.
Family was at the center of Greg’s life. He was a devoted father to his children: Candice Harris Williams (Michael), Torri Harris, and Troy Harris. To them, he was more than a dad—he was a teacher, protector, and friend. He also carried a special bond with his siblings: Clarence W. Harris, Jr. (Lisa) of Newport News, Linwood Harris of Richmond, Steven Lewis of Atlanta, Anthony Lewis of Hampton, Anthony Harris of Newport News, Dr. Debra Harris Chinnery of Suffolk, and Laurie Harris Terry (Keenen) of Hampton. His family circle extended far and wide, including a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
Greg was known for his sense of humor, his loyalty, and his ability to make anyone feel welcomed and valued. He had a way of lighting up a room with his smile and laughter, and he lived life with a mix of strength, humility, and faith. His nickname, “G Man,” reflected not only the cool confidence he carried but also the deep love and respect others had for him.
As we celebrate his life, we remember Greg not in sorrow, but with gratitude for the years we were blessed to share with him. His journey reminds us of the importance of faith, family, service, and joy. Though his earthly body has gone on, his spirit lives forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Gregory Steven Harris was a son, brother, father, and friend. He was a soldier, a leader, an athlete, and a man of faith. His legacy will continue through his children, his family, and the many lives he touched along the way.
May we find comfort in knowing that Greg now rests in Yahuah’s eternal kingdom, surrounded by love, peace, and everlasting light.
It is the desire of the Harris family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
