Gerald L. Walden, Sr. died on September 10, 2021 after sustaining severe injuries due to a car accident.
Gerald was born on November 17, 1943, in Hampton, Virginia as the second of four children to Vernell and Allison Walden. He graduated from George P. Phenix High School in 1962. Immediately thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he returned to Hampton where he subsequently graduated from Thomas Nelson Community College and Norfolk State University obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering at the latter. He went on to work at Newport News Shipbuilding for nearly 15 years before starting his own candy and vending machine business.
Gerald was a renaissance man, he was very talented when it came to home building, car repair, fishing, pool, playing cards, ping-pong, dancing, and bowling. Regarding his love for bowling, Gerald dedicated much of the last 25 years to the sport. He made a valiant effort to go bowling every day and in multiple leagues a day. He won bowling championships across the country and rolled perfect 300 games on many occasions.
Gerald is survived by his mother, two children, Maria Walden and Gerald Walden, Jr. (Saranah), two grandchildren, Emily Walden and Zachary Walden, two siblings, Diane Merritt and Wendell Walden, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, as well as his extensive bowling community.
Friends are invited to attend a viewing on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 9:00 a.m., until 11:30 a.m., at New Hope Baptist Church, 1415 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Virginia. Masks and social distancing are required.
Internment with military honors will be held at a later date at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
