Mr. George Marvin Sturdivant transitioned to his heavenly home on the morning of July 23, 2025 surrounded by his loving wife and family.
George was born on June 28, 1931, in the historic Aberdeen Garden’s neighborhood in Hampton Virginia. He was one of eleven children born to the late Ashland and Ethel Sturdivant. George (Bobby as he was affectionally known by his family), dedicated his life to service in the military, Capitol Police and his local community.
George proudly served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952 and continued his service in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1974, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant. His military career took him around the globe to various parts of the world, including deployments during the Korean War, the Vietnam War and time stationed in Japan.
He received numerous commendations for bravery and leadership. His commitment to his country was unwavering and he was a source of inspiration to all who knew him.
Following his distinguished military service, George continued to serve his community as a United States Capital Police Officer in Washington, D.C., from 1974 to 1994. Known as
“Stud” among his colleagues and friends, George was widely respected for his dedication, integrity, and compassion. Throughout his service, he had the distinguished honor of greeting four U.S. Presidents—Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, while stationed at his post in the Senate Division.
During his retirement, George found great joy in working in his yard. He took pride in planting flowers, riding his John Deere lawnmower, and striving to have the best-looking yard in the neighborhood. A passionate sports enthusiast, George especially enjoyed watching all types of games and remained a lifelong Washington Redskins fan. He loved sharing stories from his military service, often reminiscing with his wife and friends.
George regularly attended lunches with his fellow veterans at Andrews Air Force Base, cherishing memories they shared. George and Claudia are former members of Antioch Baptist Church, located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where George faithfully served on the Security Team.
They relocated to Suffolk, Virginia, to continue their journey of faith and service and the comfort of being closer to their family.George is survived by his beloved wife, Claudia, with whom he shared over 27 years of marriage. Their bond was a testament to endearing, love and partnership.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters.
He was a proud, loving father to his to children: George K. Sturdivant (Renee), Dwight Sturdivant, Tania Wingfield, Margo Britt (Terrell), Monique Jones (Kenny); Brother: Douglas Sturdivant (June); Grandchildren: Keelay Carter, Dwishon Sturdivant, Shantae Sturdivant, Bridgett Jones, Sean Wingfield, Brandon M. Bryan Wingfield, Tyler Varner; Great- granddaughter: Reagan Sturdivant. Also holding special memories, are his nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
George’s life was a testament to duty, honor, and love. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him
Military honors for Mr. Sturdivant, will be held at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
