Mr. Ernest Madison Jr. Obituary

Mr. Ernest W. Madison Jr. was born October 28, 1954 in Fort Benning, Georgia to the late Ernest W. Madison Sr. and the late Bernice Russell (Dunigan).

He was raised in Port Aurthur, Texas until middle school. The family then moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he finished his secondary education at Maury High School, 1973. While in high school, Ernest was an all-star athlete, setting records and memorable accomplishments that would propel his future.

Ernest was recruited to East Carolina University, where he attended on an athletic scholarship. For four years, he played on the ECU football team, where they won a conference championship. He was also the first player from ECU to be selected for the Senior Bowl. He completed college in 1981.

In 1986, Ernest began his professional career with at risk youth and families through his employment with the Hampton Court Service Unit, under the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), as a Probation Officer. He later spent many years working at Chesapeake Juvenile Services and Newport News Juvenile Services, where he served both localities as Deputy Director. While pursuing his career in criminal justice he earned his Master’s Degree from The George Washington University.

He also pursued his PH.D from University of Phoenix. He was also an Adjunct Professor at Christopher Newport University, in hopes to spread his love for education. Ernest was most recently employed with AMI Kids, based out of Tampa, Florida, where he served as a Resource Manager for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).

Ernest married, the former, Ellen Brown on April 3, 1999. Together they have three children, Samantha Battle (Eric), Octavia Madison, and Terrell Madison (Jasinta). They also share eight grandchildren: MaKaylee Battle, Christian Burke, Eric Battle Jr., Kian Wesby, Logan Madison, Bella-Rose Jackson, Audrey Madison, and Savannah Battle. In the community, Ernest was a member of New Beech Grove Baptist Church where he participated in community basketball and softball games.

His love and passion for sports, especially the game of football, continued his drive into “sideline coaching” for his grandchildren and other young athletes.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest W. Madison Sr. and Bernice Russell (Dunigan), and his sister, Jacqueline Brown. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Madison; three children: Samantha Battle (Eric), Octavia Madison, and Terrell Madison (Jasinta); two sisters: Shirley Redmon, and Pernice Cartwright; eight grandchildren: MaKaylee Battle, Christian Burke, Eric Battle Jr., Kian Wesby, Logan Madison, Bella-Rose Jackson, Audrey Madison, and Savannah Battle; and a host of beloved family and friends in local and distant communities.

It is the desire of the Madison family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
