On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Elbert H. Cotten Jr. 76 peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ surrounded by his wife and family.
Elbert was born on October 17, 1949, to the late Emma Peterson (James) and Elbert H. Cotten Sr. (Bea). He attended public school in Newport News, VA., where he played basketball and graduated with the Class of 1968 from Huntington High School. Elbert worked at Northrop Grumman (Newport News Shipyard), Newport News Waterworks, Howmet Aerospace and for his brother at Anthony’s Handyman. Elbert, was a member of True Word Ministry, Hampton, VA under the leadership of Rev. Wesley Wooten, Sr.
Elbert was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Peterson, and Elbert H. Cotten Sr., his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles. Elbert leaves to cherish his memories to his wife of 25 years, Rose Cotten of the home, two stepsons; Darrin L. Tucker and Anthony L. Tucker of Newport News, VA. two daughters; Anita Cotten, and Kimberly Williams, both of Newport News, VA, one son; Shelly Ellison, of Ashburn, VA., two sisters; Valerie C. Thompson (Sam) of Oak City, NC, and Debra (DeeDee) Peterson of Fayetteville, NC., three brothers; James R. Peterson (Barbara) and Anthony D. Peterson, of Newport News, VA., and Dennis M. Peterson (Linda) of Fayetteville, NC., ten grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
It is the desire of the Cotten family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers. The family of Mr. Elbert H. Cotten, Jr. has entrusted his final care to C. C. Carter Funeral Home.
