Mr. Dennis Mathis Obituary

On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, God, in his infinite wisdom, dispatched an angel of mercy and called Dennis James Mathis from labor to reward.

Dennis was born on June 22, 1953, to the late James and Helen Mathis. He was affectionately known as “Hot Shot” to his family and friends. He was educated in the Newport News Public School System and was a proud graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Class of 1971. He loved the Lord and accepted Christ at an early age.

Dennis had an infectious personality and never met a stranger. He was humorous with a heart of gold. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, without hesitation.  He was full of life and could lighten up any room with his presence. His wife, Vickie, was the love of his life and he treasured their love. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed listening to gospel music.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, AJ Mathis; brother, Donald Mathis; brother-in-law, Walter Grant and grandson, Dameion Brown.

His legacy will fondly be treasured by his faithful and loving wife, Vickie Venice Mathis; children, Tiffany Cooper (Devin), Dennis Mathis, Jr.; bonus sons, Kareem Brown (Monet) and George Brown, III; sisters, Maggie Denise Twine (Robert) and Scarlette Grant; sisters-in-law, Gloria Mathis and Angelia Turner (Rufus); grandchildren, Ajaria, Lola, Devin, Elijah, Kareem Jr., Mahogany, Mayla, Jaqure, Jaden, Alexis and Brianna; nieces, Tiffany Twine and Toshia Thrift (Bryan); special cousins, Elizabeth (Jo Jo) Stone and Gale Steward; best friends, Butch Christian and Boo Green; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

May all who shared his life find peace and comfort knowing that our loss became heaven’s great gain. So let God's promise soften your sorrow and give you renewed strength. While we are mourning this great loss, heaven is rejoicing for a soul set free. Death leaves a heartache no man can heal; love leaves a memory no man can steal.

It is the Mathis family's desire that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
