Mr. DeShawn Marcel Powell

DeShawn Marcel Powell was born on March 7, 2001, in Hampton, VA  to John W. Powell Jr. and Tonisha Darrell.  He transitioned to eternal life on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton VA.  

DeShawn (Shawn), grew up in Newport News VA.  From an early age and throughout his life, Shawn was full of energy, very charismatic, and fiercely loyal.

He became a die-hard fan of the New Orleans Saints NFL football team, after giving up on Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts after one losing season (only exception to being fiercely loyal).

He graduated from Menchville High School in 2019.  He played both basketball and football, wearing the number “32” and earning the nickname “White Shoes”.   After graduating, he enrolled at Thomas Nelson Community College to pursue a degree in Engineering.  While there, Shawn decided a career in the U.S. Air Force would better suit his ambitions and he was actively working with a recruiter at the time of his passing. In the interim, Shawn was working at Papa John’s Pizza and had recently accepted a job at the Newport News Shipyard.

Shawn was a member of Ivy Baptist Church where he gave his life to Christ and participated in Youth Ministry.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his parents Tonisha Darrell, Robert Darrell, and John W. Powell Jr.; grandparents John and O’Vivian Powell; sisters Tyler Powell and Destini Powell; niece Phoenix; nephew Pharaoh and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Wake Service for Mr. Powell will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Ivy Baptist Church, 50 Maple Avenue, Newport News, Virginia 23607.

A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Powell will take place at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 2, 2021 at  Ivy Baptist Church, 50 Maple Avenue, Newport News, Virginia 23607 with Dr. Kevin G. Swann presiding.

Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
