Mr. David Garrett, Jr.

David Alphonso Garrett, Jr. peacefully completed his earthly journey on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Surrounded by the love of family and sustained by his faith, he entered eternal rest and everlasting peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

            David was born on November 17, 1956, in Newport News, Virginia, to the late David A. Garrett, Sr., and Clara L. Garrett Lucas. He received his early education in the Newport News Public School System and graduated from Hampton High School in 1975. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he faithfully served for four years before receiving an Honorable Discharge.

            Following his military service, David built a strong work ethic and dedicated many years of service to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (Huntington Ingalls Industries) and later to Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

            Most importantly, David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and became a devoted member of New Life Church. There, he served in the New Life Church Mass Choir, Men’s Fellowship Ministry, and Drama Ministry. His love for God was reflected not only in his church service but also in the kindness and compassion he extended to others.

            David will be remembered as a gentle, loving, faithful, and kind man. He was especially devoted to his mother, whom he cared for with tenderness and unwavering dedication, treating her as a precious treasure. His quiet strength, warm heart, and caring spirit touched the lives of many. He enjoyed cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys and found great pleasure in coin collecting, a hobby that brought him both joy and relaxation.

            David was preceded in death by his father, David A. Garrett, Sr.; his maternal grandparents, David and Florence Williams; his paternal grandparents, David and Lucille Garrett; his aunt, Doris Garrett Wheeler; and his uncle, Milton Garrett.

            He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life: his beloved son, David A. Garrett III of Capron, Virginia; his stepdaughter, Jasmine Powell of Newport News, Virginia; his loving mother, Minister Clara Lucas (Elder Albert) of Hampton, Virginia; his brothers, Corey Lunceford of Hampton, Virginia, Elder Shelton Lucas of Smithfield, Virginia, and Steven Lucas of Houston, Texas; his sisters, Evette Lucas-Howard of Newport News, Virginia, Karen Baker (Michael) of Carrollton, Virginia, and Ingrid Garrett of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is also survived by five cherished grandchildren, Louis, Jamari, Brooklynn, Kameron, and Harlem Powell; four nieces, Bryahna, Ryahn, and Londyn Lunceford, and Venetta Garrett; and a host of cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

            Though our hearts are saddened by his departure, his legacy of love, service, devotion, and faith will continue to live on in all who knew him.

The family of Mr. David Garrett Jr. has entrusted his final care to C.C. Carter Funeral Home.

Military honors will be held at the church the day of service for Mr. Garrett.
