In Loving Memory
On November 4, 2021, God came to receive his own, our beloved, Curtis Leon Hunter. He was born August 23, 1956, to the late James Henry and Naomi Brinkley Hunter in Halifax County, NC. Curtis received his early education in North Carolina and then continued his education in the Newport News, Virginia school system.
Curtis joined the Army National Guard in 1976 and after a short time, he decided it was not for him. He went to work as a truck driver for many years and had a passion of working on cars- a mechanic at heart. He was a great driver and enjoyed teaching his sister and others how to drive. He found great humor in hearing stories from his sister Barbara about the bad drivers she encountered - she would tell him, “They must not know who taught me how to drive!”. He would laugh a big laugh because he KNEW he taught her well.
Curtis had a fiery personality & was very direct. He said what he meant, and he meant what he said! Yet, he was an amusing joker. He also had a very kind and loving heart. You could always count on him to check on his mother every day. When he was no longer driving, he would readily hop on the bus to visit her. His favorite pastime was watching Westerns! He also enjoyed playing chess, attending gospel quartet signings, and spending time with family & friends.
Curtis was his sister Joyce’s traveling buddy and was a human GPS – he could get you anywhere you needed to go. He loved riding out with family and friends and attending get togethers and family gatherings. He knew how to have a good time. And most importantly, he knew the Lord. He started and ended each day in prayer.
Curtis was preceded in death by his father and his mother and brothers, Charles Henry Hunter Sr. and James Earl Hunter. Curtis will be missed by all who knew him. His loving and devoted sisters Joyce (Herman) Cottman, Mildred Fox, Barbara (Fred) Moffett, Pamela (Mack) Johnson. One brother, Nelson Cleven Hunter. Sister-in- law, Anita Hunter. Two aunts, Lucinda Battle and Lillie Brinkley. Two uncles, Elbert (Wylene) Wilkins and Leslie Brinkley Jr. A very special friend, Ms. Phyllis Smith. Adopted daughters - Isis and Tiara, adopted son, BJ, and an adopted granddaughter, Cekenyah. Five nieces, Cheryl Hunter (he nicknamed-Witchy Pooh), Charlitta (Maurice) Knightnor, Altonia Garrett, Erica Hunter, and Naomi Green. Five Nephews, Alphonso (Vanessa) Garrett, Charles Jr. (Riche’) Hunter, Jermaine Hunter, DeMarco Fox, and Jamotia Hunter. Thirteen great nieces and nephews and four great- great nieces. God sisters Katrina Pittman and Mary (Patrick) Mills. Best buddies, Johnny Arrington and John “Pig” Gatling. His caregiver Karen Harvey and a host of other relatives and friends.
