Mr. Crawford Smith

With profound love, gratitude, and admiration, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Crawford Wilson Smith, who peacefully entered eternal rest on July 6, 2026, at the age of 89.

A devoted husband, father, faithful servant of God, visionary educator, mentor, and beloved patriarch, Crawford lived a life defined by unwavering faith, humble leadership, steadfast integrity, and an enduring commitment to serving others. His legacy reaches far beyond his family and profession, touching countless lives through compassion, wisdom, excellence, and love.

Born on April 6, 1937, in Wake County, North Carolina, affectionately known by him as "God's Country," Crawford was raised in a family grounded in faith, perseverance, and service. After graduating from G.C. Hawley High School in 1955, he continued his education at Harris Barber College and Shaw University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Intermediate Education. His commitment to lifelong learning led him to Virginia, where he completed graduate studies and earned a Master of Arts degree in Administration and Supervision from Hampton University in 1974.

While attending Shaw University, Crawford met the love of his life, the former Claretta Royall. Their friendship blossomed into a remarkable marriage spanning nearly 65 years, built on unwavering love, faith, and devotion.

Crawford began his career with Newport News Public Schools in 1961 as a teacher before advancing into educational leadership. In 1973, he made history as the first African American appointed as an Organizational Assistant in the Newport News School Division. He later served as Personnel Coordinator, Director of Personnel, and Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services, providing visionary leadership under six superintendents. Following his retirement, he continued his life's work as Assistant Professor of Education and Coordinator of Clinical Experiences at Hampton University, where he mentored and prepared future educators.

Throughout his life, Crawford believed deeply in the potential of every person. He often reminded others, "There is no better way to let people know you are interested or care than to listen to them." Whether offering encouragement, thoughtful advice, or simply a compassionate ear, he made people feel valued, respected, and inspired to become their very best.

Outside of his professional life, Crawford found great joy in gardening, spending time outdoors, and making memories with family and friends. His faith guided every aspect of his life. A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Hampton and Men's Action Fellowship, a proud Diamond Life member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and a life member of the NAACP, he quietly exemplified servant leadership through his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to others.

Crawford was preceded in death by his parents, Hudie, Sr. and Clara; one sister, Margree; and two brothers, Hudie, Jr. and James Louis.

Left to cherish his memory and continue his legacy are his loving wife, Claretta; his children, Andrea, Millicent (Kipp), and Terrell (Keyanna); his grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel; his sister, Carolyn; his brothers, Linwood (Jane), Edward (Dorine), and William Thomas (Faye); his sisters-in-law, Sophia Smith and Estelle Estes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, former students, and colleagues.

His was a life beautifully lived, deeply loved, and richly blessed.

The Phi Beta Sigma will have an Omega Ceremony Friday, July 17, 2026. in the Rose - Emily Memorial Chapel of C.C. Carter Funeral Home. from 5:00p.m. until 6:00p.m.
