Mr. Charles A. (Hawk) Marshall Jr.

Mr.  Charles Allan (Hawk) Marshall, Jr., a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend entered eternal rest April 3, 2026. Born April 15, 1940, in Elizabeth City County (Hampton), Virginia, Charles was the second child of the late Charles A. Marshall, Sr. and Rosetta Ward Marshall Cooke. He received his education at Hampton Institute’s campus, George P. Phenix School. While there, he was a member of the basketball team. Charles (Hawk) was a proud graduate of the Class of 1958.

He served as Treasurer and coordinated fundraisers for the Phenix High Alumni Class of 1958. Also, he was a member of the Phenix Legacy. After graduating high school, Charles was employed with the Officers Club, Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Virginia. Later he was employed with the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock, Newport News, Virginia. Charles worked for the United States Department of the Navy before he was drafted in August 1963 to serve in the United States Army. He received an honorable discharge in August 1965. After his military service, Charles joined the Army Recruiting Command at Fort Monroe, Virginia.

He completed the Records Management Program with the Army and subsequently was promoted to Records Management at Fort McPherson, Georgia. His career journey took him to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and finally he was transferred to Fort Eustis, Virginia closer to home. Charles retired after 32 years of Federal service. Charles married Barbara A. Needam. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Tonette Regina Marshall and Kimberly Dar’shal Marshall. Charles joined Queen Street Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Reverend George S. Russell. He rededicated his life to Christ. He was a faithful and loyal servant until the end. Charles was the heart of his family and a blessing to all who knew him. Charles loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved his family and friends and never turned away anyone in need.

His home was always open to everyone. Hawk, the Chef, enjoyed cooking for himself and especially for others. Charles always stepped up to the challenge to cook for any type or size of event. Also, he enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching women’s basketball. Charles celebrated his birthday with family and friends every year. All we had to do was show up and eat. Charles had several traditions during the year. The most memorable one is when he removed the Christmas lights and Christmas tree after his birthday in April. One of his proudest moments was when Kimberly graduated from Hampton University, School of Pharmacy.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. Marshall, Sr. and Rosetta Ward Marshall Cooke, and his siblings, Gayle Diane Marshall, William B. Marshall, and Helen M. Bostic. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife and children, Barbara A. Marshall; Tonette R. Marshall and Kimberly D. Marshall; a special daughter, Sheila Wilson; his granddaughters, Shawnda R. Marshall and Shayla L. Marshall; his grandson, Kyian C. Ezell; and his great-grandson, King Caius McNeil. Devoted and loving siblings, Earnest R. Marshall and Patricia G. Marshall; a faithful companion, Ms. Gloria K. Jones who was with him till the end; a special sister, Wanda P. Broadie; his niece, Regina L. Cropp; and his nephews, Gregory L. Marshall, Michael A. Bostic (Renita), and Kevin Marshall, great-nieces, Donice T. Bostic and Kayla Marshall; and great-nephews, DeSean A. Bostic; Noble Marshall Morning, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and an overwhelming amount of extended family who loved him dearly.
