Mr. Carl Armstead Obituary

Mr. Carl Maurice Armstead, age 60, of Newport News, Virginia, transitioned peacefully in his home on July 4, 2026, after battling an illness. He was born on August 1, 1965, to the late Arthur James Armstead, Sr., and Mary S. Armstead. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Arthur J. Armstead II.

Carl grew up in the Aberdeen and Granger Court neighborhoods of Hampton, Virginia, where, as a child, he loved riding his bike, playing kickball, running track, and playing Little League football. Carl attended Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton with his family. He attended Bethel High School and the Apprentice School of Newport News Shipbuilding, where he played football for both. He furthered his education at Hampton University, receiving a B.S. degree in Business Administration.

Carl worked for Newport News Shipbuilding for 20 years as a welder and planning supervisor. He then became a devoted caregiver to his mother, Mary S. Armstead, until her passing in 2022.

Carl loved sports, especially football. His favorite team was the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he enjoyed seeing Mike Tomlin on the sidelines. He enjoyed all types of seafood, especially crabs, and would spend hours eating crabs with his daughter in the garage. He loved music and even kept up with current artists such as Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Jeezy. He loved making people laugh and entertaining others. He often expressed that he would like to do stand-up comedy one day. He also had a green thumb, which he inherited from his father.

Carl leaves to cherish his memory his wife of thirty-three years, Doris Armstead; daughter, Bianca Armstead; sister, Sheila Paige (Doran); brother, Marcus Armstead (Karen); son, David Hadley; grandchildren, Torrilyn Hadley and Daveon Hadley; sister-in-law, Wanda Peacock (Joe); nieces, Regina Jones (Thurston) and Olivia Armstead; nephews, Paul Paige (Jessica) and William Armstead; aunts, Velma Brown, Mildred Chambers (Willie), and Ann Snipes; uncles, Charles Armstead and Archie Snipes (Carolyn); best friends, Paul Jackson, James Williams ("Hotshot"), Ronnie Wiggens, Alvin Bailey, Leonard Vanhook; and many more cousins, family members, and friends.

Special thanks to Carl and Doris' best friends, Keith and Gracie Rascoe, Rhonda, Belinda, Tawanda, D.J., Tevin, Ashlee Memitt, Doris, Damien, Louise Thomas, and Butch.
