Mr. Bruce Carver Obituary

On Monday December 1, 2025, Bruce Clenton Carver passed away in Hampton, Virginia at the age of 64 following complications from Alzheimer's Disease and series of associated physical ailments .

Bruce was born July 7, 1961 in Baltimore, Maryland to George and Bernice (Howard) Carver.

Bruce graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1979, where he first developed his interest in pursuing a career in business while participating in the school’s Junior Achievement program. He continued his academic career at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) majoring in finance.

Before his graduation from Virginia Tech in 1983, he became a prominent student leader and left a lasting mark on the Blacksburg, Virginia institution. He served as a dormitory resident assistant, participated in the school’s ring committee, and perhaps most prominently founded the school’s Mu Nu chapter of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

After graduation from college. Bruce first embarked on a career in corporate and public management. His first role was a store general manager at the Hills department store chain in their locations in Tennessee and Ohio. He later took on a management role at the Department of Defense in Washington, DC.

Always a person looking for a new challenge, Bruce pursued advanced degrees at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia and then at DePaul University’s Driehaus College of Business in Chicago, Illinois where he received his Masters in Business Administration focusing on Human Resources and Organizational Development in 1996.

After completing his post-graduate education, Bruce shifted his career to the then-emerging world of information technology. He was a long-standing member of Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF), an organization for senior level IT executives.  He served in a series of leadership roles in IT beginning at Household International/HSBC in 1990. Bruce was then promoted to roles as Vice-President and Chief Information Office at a series of major corporations including Reynolds & Reynolds, PepsiCo, Dana Corporation, and Cummins, Incorporated before moving onto a role as a consultant in the industry before his retirement.

While Bruce served as global Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Cummins, a global engine and power equipment manufacturing company from 2008-2013.  He had a tremendous impact there as the first true CIO reporting directly to the CEO.  While there, he transformed the IT organization and as a result was also given responsibility for business services. The company grew from $10B in revenue to $17B during his tenure, with 44,000 employees operating in 190 countries.  Bruce led the technology transformation during this period which enabled the IT organization to scale and strategically support the company’s growth given its complex global, 8 business units, and large global gateway country offices.

Bruce was more than a leader, he was a mentor, advocate, trusted guide, and true friend to many. He shared his professional and personal passions with remarkable generosity, always leading with kindness and compassion. Bruce had a rare ability to recognize potential in others and used his platform to create meaningful opportunities for growth. His generosity of time, wisdom, and encouragement lifted those around him and helped shape a generation of leaders who carry forward his legacy.

Beyond a successful career in business, Bruce was a true renaissance man with a variety of interests. The love of his life and an ongoing passion for him was the world of art. From an early age, he loved music and musical theatre. Bruce was also a patron of the arts and a major collector of African-American visual art. Bruce was also a creator of art as he loved creating and designing jewelry through his jewelry enterprise Clenton Design Studio as well as painting and needlepoint, sharing his artwork with the public at exhibitions and galleries.

Bruce had a generous spirit, donating to causes of great importance to him. He was a major donor at Virginia Tech and funded an arts scholarship at his alma mater in his name. He also served on several prominent boards including those of public broadcasting, the United Way, Lourdes University and the Toledo Museum of Art.

Bruce also worked as a mentor with i.c.stars, an organization that provides young adults with technology-based workforce development, community leadership training, internships and job placement.
