Mr. Augustus Cornelius Hughes Jr, 81, of Hampton, VA, passed away on September 15, 2023. He was born in Newport News, VA in 1942 to the late Augustus Cornelius Hughes Sr. and Virginia Epps Hughes.
Known to family and friends as “Gus”, the Hughes family was well known in the North Newport News area. Gus graduated from Carver High School in 1960 and went to trade school at the Shipyard to learn mechanical drawing and blueprint reading and to become a Machinist. He was employed at the Shipyard for 13 years before leaving to work with his father at the Hilton Shell Service Station in Newport News as an Assistant Manager. Gus eventually continued his career as a Machinist at Liebherr-America, then Mercedes-Benz Truck Company before retiring in 2006 from Siemens Automotive.
Raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, Gus who was also known as “Brother” from people in the congregation, was baptized along with his wife Shirley on July 19, 1975 and believed in his faith to the very end. On Sunday’s he would attend service and then during football season, come home to watch his favorite team, the Washington Commanders (formerly known as Redskins).
Gus was devoted to his family and adored his wife Shirley. He had such an infectious personality and loved to have a good time. He never complained about anything and would always have a great laugh and a big smile. During the summer he always welcomed the kids in the neighborhood to come swim in the pool and loved to cook on the grill. Anyone who came by the house on the weekends knew they would be treated to a delicious breakfast of waffles or his famous French toast! He also made great desserts such as rice pudding and lemon meringue pie!
Gus was preceded in death by Augustus C. Hughes Sr., and Virginia E. Hughes, and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley W. Hughes, Hampton, VA, son Augustus C.
