Mr. Alton “Joe” Brown, 88, peacefully transitioned at home in Hampton on Monday, November 10, 2025, with his family by his side. Those who knew him best will remember he was full of life, a smooth talker, loved to dress to impress and wore Kangol hats faithfully.
Joe was born on June 17, 1937, in Waverly, Virginia, as the second eldest of seven children to George and Katie Brown. He was a father, brother, uncle, and friend. He received his education at Carver High School in Newport News. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic that remained consistent throughout his life. After successfully completing the Apprentice School Program, he dedicated 44 years of service to the Newport News Shipyard as a pipe fitter.
He was preceded by his parents, George and Katie Brown; two sons, Aaron Britt and Alton Brothers; a brother, George “Hump” Brown, Jr. and two sisters, Cora Sterns and Glanice Boone.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Nathaniel “Scap” Brown (Christine) and Leroyal “Lee” Brown; his sister, Ruth Webb (Eddie); as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and many devoted relatives and friends.
It is the desire of the Brown/Sterns families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
The family of Mr. Alton Lee Brown has entrusted his final care to C. C. Carter Funeral Home.
