Monday, March 29, 2021 Alphonzo “Rock” Griffin Jr., brother, beloved uncle and friend to all transitioned at the age of 58. Alphonzo was born May 9, 1962 in Newport News, Virginia to Alphonzo and Alice Griffin. He was married to Cora Griffin.
Alphonzo was raised in York County, Virginia and graduated from Tabb High School where he accelerated in NJROTC. He was Company Commander and won numerous individual drill competitions. After graduation he took up carpentry and worked with several companies in the local area. Alphonzo was a self-employed handyman. He was a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. He repaired cars, built sheds, installed plumbing and tree removal. Many of these skills came naturally to him.
Rock as he was so fondly called by family and friends had a big heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He could turn up any event and loved his music loud! I am sure we have all heard him sing “Fire” because that was one of his favorites. Eating was one of his favorite pass times. He literally could eat white beans every day oh that’s right any beans would do. He always had rice with his beans. “Man” as he is sometimes referred to loved family and spending time with his nieces and nephews. Christmastime brought great joy as Rock was known for singing the deep part of the Temptation’s Silent Night. Rock lived life without reservation and never passed up an opportunity to have fun.
Alphonzo was preceded in death by his father Alphonzo, Sr and his mother Alice, his wife Cora as well as his niece Tonya Griffin and nephew Marcus Griffin. He is survived by his 6 sisters Sharon Washington (Hampton, VA), Velma Griffin (Chattanooga, TN), Phyllis Griffin (Newport News, VA), Diedra Griffin (Newport News, VA), Germaine Grinkley (Mooresville, NC) and Regina Griffin (Oglethorpe, GA); and several nieces and nephews; a beloved friend of the family Russell Myers, and a host of extended family and friends.
Viewing for Mr. Griffin will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Thursday, April 8, 2021 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc.

Life Goes On
By Joyce Grenfell
If I should go before the rest of you
Break not a flower
Nor inscribe a stone
Nor when I am gone
Speak in a Sunday voice
But be the usual selves
That I have known
Weep if you must
Parting is hell
But life goes on
So…sing as well
