Mr. Alexis Smith

Mr. Alexis Babar Smith was called from labor to reward on Friday, May 30, 2026, in God’s infinite wisdom.

Early Life

Alexis was born and raised in Hampton, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Bertha Bernice Williams, and Lloyd Williams of Hampton, Virginia, and by his father, Alfred Babar of York County, Virginia.

Career and Work Ethic

After graduating from Pembroke High School, Alexis, lovingly known as “Smitty,” began his career with Hampton City Schools as a custodian and part-time painter. Through years of hard work and dedication, he was promoted to lead custodian.

Later, he joined Newport News City Schools, where he served as Paint Shop and Roofing Department Supervisor. During his time there, he received numerous academic and job performance awards, along with certificates of recognition for his dedication and exemplary leadership. His co-workers held him in high esteem and admired his strong work ethic.

Alexis also worked part-time during the summers at Hampton University as an overnight custodian. After 25 years of service with Hampton City Schools and 29 years with Newport News City Schools, he retired to spend more time enjoying his grandchildren and pursuing his many hobbies.

Interests and Faith

Alexis enjoyed dining out at various restaurants, with Fertitta’s Diner among his favorites. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and also enjoyed watching basketball. A car restoration enthusiast, he spent many memorable days with his best friend restoring a beautiful El Camino. He also loved boating and fishing whenever time allowed.

Known for his sharp style, Alexis took pride in dressing well and owned a collection of Kangol caps to match every color in his wardrobe. He was outgoing, friendly, and deeply loyal to both family and friends, always willing to go above and beyond to help those in need.

Alexis considered one of his greatest accomplishments to be accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized on March 13, 2011, at Harbor Baptist Church by Pastor C. J. Prather.

Family and Legacy

His legacy will be cherished by his four children: Alexis Sedgwick (and his wife, Antionette) of Newport News, Virginia; Broderick Sedgwick of Newport News, Virginia; Dana Dearing of Hampton, Virginia; and Raven Smith of Newport News, Virginia.

He will also be deeply missed by his brothers, Ronald Williams of Maryland, Kenneth Williams of Hampton, Virginia, and Victor Baber of Newport News, Virginia; and by his sisters, Sheila Williams of North Carolina and Sonya Williams of Chesapeake, Virginia.

His aunts, Barbara L. Pipkin of Middletown, Ohio, Gloria Edwards of Middletown, Ohio, and Carla S. Carmichael of McDonough, Georgia, along with his uncle, Reverend Andrew L. Smith, cherish the memories of their beloved “Stinky,” his childhood nickname. Alexis is also survived by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

It is the Smith family desire that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
