Alexander Hundley was born December 7, 1953, in Hampton, Virginia to the union of the Effie Braxton-Hundley and Alexander Hundley. He was the fourth child born of this union. He was preceded in death by one sister, Roberta Moore.
Alexander, also known as “Al”, was baptized in Third Baptist Church, Hampton and received his formal education through the Hampton Pubic School system attending Thomas Eaton Junior High School and Pembroke High School. While attending junior high school, Al discovered his passion for music.
At an early age, Alexander had a passion for playing the drums and no other instruments. While in elementary school, on his way home, he would watch and listen to the neighboring junior high school’s marching band practice sessions and eventually they let him play.
He had a natural God given talent. He self taught himself to play the drums and learned all the cadences. At the time, of course, Al didn’t own a drum set, so he made his own make-shift drum set with a box, a rope around his neck and sticks. He formed his won marching band with other band members and majorettes and they would perform throughout the neighborhood. When getting to junior high school, he along with other friends formed the “Soulphonics”.
Throughout his lifetime, Al was a member of several bands: Soulphonice, Black Maxx, Harvest, TFC, Masters of Soul, and Above and Beyond. He was in high demand as a drummer and traveled throughout the country filing in for many other bands when a drummer was needed. He was a master percussionist and played all genres of music: Jazz, Pop, Soul, R&B, Rock, and Gospel.
Alex was not only an awesome drummer, he was able to play the drums and MC at the same time. He paved the way for jazz local drummers and musicians, and many were influenced by him.
AL was a member of Full Gospel Outreach Ministry, Norfolk, Virginia and served with the music ministry. He would also fill in and play for other churches.
It is the desire of the Hundley family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
