Lt. Col (Ret) & Coach James Emmett Sweat, Sr., husband of Mrs. Phyllis LaVerne Sweat and retired coach of both Norfolk State and Hampton University Women's Basketball programs, transitioned Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Virginia.

It is the desire of the Sweat family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

The family of Lt. Col (Ret). James Emmett Sweat, Sr. has entrusted his final care to C. C. Carter Funeral Home.
