Elder Alvester Vaughan Jr. a devoted servant of God, peacefully departed this world on June 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his loving wife and children at the young age of 82.
Alvester was born on December 6, 1943, in Ahoskie, North Carolina, to the late Sally Newsome Vaughan and Alvester Vaughan Sr. At the age of ten, he and his family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, where he attended Booker T. Washington High School.
Alvester's early journey through life was not without challenges. As a young man, he faced the struggles and influences of gang involvement, but God had greater plans for his life. Though his formal education concluded after the eighth grade, he never allowed limited educational opportunities to define his future or hinder his purpose. Through perseverance, determination, and an abiding faith in God, Alvester grew into a devoted husband, loving father, faithful provider, and dedicated servant of the Lord. His life became a testimony of God's grace and transforming power, marked by devotion, service, and an unwavering commitment to his family and faith.
Alvester built a distinguished career beginning in 1972 with Newport News Shipbuilding as a Structural Fitter. He later continued his career at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, giving him a combined total of more than 30 years of dedicated service. Known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment, he faithfully provided for his family while earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
In 1987, Alvester was ordained as an Elder at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. For more than 39 years, Elder Alvester Vaughan Jr. faithfully preached the Gospel, ministered to others, encouraged countless individuals to walk in faith and to attend church where the “doors swing on welcome hinges”. His unwavering devotion to God became a guiding light, inspiring all who knew him to live with compassion, humility, and integrity. Elder Alvester Vaughan Jr. was a pillar in his community and was affectionately known as "the Neighborhood Mayor," a title that reflected his warm spirit, welcoming nature, genuine love for people and giving hair cuts to those who sat in his chair.
Elder Alvester Vaughan Jr. was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sally Newsome Vaughan and Alvester Vaughan Sr., and by his one and only sister, Virginia Mitchell.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 43 years, Patricia Vaughan, who faithfully stood by his side through life's joys and challenges. He also leaves behind his seven beloved children: Robert Vaughan (Ronica Vaughan), Anthony Vaughan, Mechelle Bailey, Mary Ann Vaughan, Michael Vaughan, Alvena Jones, and Isaac Vaughan.
He was a proud grandfather who deeply loved his grandchildren: Ciara Vaughan, Tyesha Vaughan, De-anne Vaughan, Camella Vaughan, Ronneisha Stephens, Jasmine Sargent, Jamie Vaughan, Trey Vaughan, Mikea Vaughan, Lulago Vaughan, Patrick Middlebrook, Kevin Middlebrook, Malcolm Middlebrook, Hailey Jones, and Matthew R.J. Jones.
He also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren, along with a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who loved him deeply and will forever cherish his memory.
As we bid farewell to Elder Alvester Vaughan Jr., we celebrate a life richly blessed, deeply loved, and faithfully lived. Though he will be greatly missed, his legacy of love, devotion, and service endures in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.
