Deacon Fred Lawrence Powell went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, May 2, 2023. Fred was born in Greensboro N.C. on July 19, 1938, to Lillian and Herbert Pennix. He would go on to graduate in the class of 1956 from James B. Dudley High School. Fred moved to Newport News, VA in 1971 and began his career as a shipbuilder. He worked as a Shipfitter at Northrop Grumman (Newport News Shipyard) where he retired after thirty years of dedicated service.
Fred was a hard worker and dedicated Father that always put his family first. He had a great sense of humor and a smile that could light up a room. He was a loving husband to his wife Edna for over 40 years.
Fred was a faithful member at First Church of Newport News Baptist for over 15 years. He served on the usher board, was a member of the missionary society, and a faithful member of the deacon board until he was faced with health challenges.
Fred displayed extraordinary strength even in the midst of his health challenges. A man of “Faith”, Fred will always be remembered for his positive outlook on life, can-do attitude, and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Fred was predeceased by his father, Herbert Pennix and stepmother Geneva Pennix. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Lillian Powell of Greensboro, N.C., his wife Edna and their five children: Clint Powell, Victor Powell, Tracey Frisby (Kerry), Gary Powell, and Kenneth Vinson; three children from a prior marriage: Kendall Mckoy (Bruce), Monica Williams-Powell, and Terrance Powell. He also leaves a host of grandchildren, other relatives, and friends to celebrate his life.
After Interment of Deacon Powell there will be a repast at New Hope Baptist Church, 1415 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Virginia.
It is the desire of the Powell family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
