Henry Ernest Alston was born on July 26, 1939, in North Carolina to the late Tom and Betsy Alston. His brothers, Gid and Elijah Alston also preceded him in death.
Henry attended school in Halifax County and graduated from McIver High School in Littleton, NC. After graduating, Henry held various positions including working at a local mill. Shortly thereafter, Henry relocated to Hampton, VA and worked at the Newport News Shipyard, Hampton Public Schools, and later opened his own business, H & E Janitorial Service. He married the former Vera Fauntleroy in 1985. During their 38 years of marriage, they enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, and serving the Lord. Henry was employed with Hampton Public Schools with expertise in plumbing
.Henry attended First Church of Newport News Baptist and served faithfully on the Deacon Ministry, Sunday School, and Usher Ministry. He was also a member of the Christian Fellowship Choir and the leading member of the Men’s Star Bible Class which met weekly to study God’s word. Henry frequently visited the sick and shut-in and was always willing to lend his “handyman” expertise to help others when repairs were needed around their homes. He was also a pioneer in flipping homes by using his technical building knowledge of renovating properties and renting them to others as affordable living options.
Henry was also a great cook. Many have enjoyed his slow-cooked collard greens, tasty sweet potato pies, turnips, and other delicious dishes.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Vera; children Ernest Alston, Michael Fauntleroy (Kim), Shirley & Karen Harvey; brothers Willie Mack and Tom Alston; sisters, Lucille Pleasants and Betsy Dawson; sister-in-law Jerlean Alston; six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. To God be the glory for a life well-lived.
The Alston family ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers at this time.
