Col. Ernest Lyons Jr., Obituary

On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, Col. Ernest Lyons, Jr. peacefully transitioned from earth to eternal life in his heavenly home.  Ernest was born on May 10, 1954 in Salina, Kansas to Nannette Seabron Lyons and the late Ernest Lyons, Sr.

Because of his father’s active-duty military career, Ernest attended schools in Massachusetts, Virginia, Canada, and California, graduating from Hampton High School in 1971.  He then completed an Intern Program in Hospital Administration with Humana in Aurora, Colorado. While a student at UVA, Ernest was a member of the track team, serving as co-captain in his senior year.

During his military career, Ernest progressed from Lieutenant to Colonel. He served in various military support administrative positions on military bases including Ft. Gillem, GA, Ft. Sam Houston, TX, Ft. Lewis, WA, and Ft. McPherson, GA.  He also received many awards and honors during his distinguished military service, including the Legend of Merit.

Ernest Lyons, Jr. was a good and decent man, as well as a positive role model for any young man to follow.  The greatest joy in his life was his family, “Team Lyons.”  Ernest was a real “hands-on” father, and enjoyed a very close relationship with his son, Jared, even qualifying as a Scout Leader to help him earn the Eagle Award. Ernest had many interests and talents.  He learned horseback riding in college, tried skydiving, loved dancing, and for many years was an avid skier.

Ernest accepted Christ at an early age. He was baptized and became a member of Union Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia.  Along with his sister, Judi, he sang in the Junior Choir and participated in other youth activities. He was most recently a member of Mountain West Church in Tucker, GA.

His memory will be forever cherished by his beloved wife of 24 years, Mary, son Jared, mother Nannette, and sister Judith, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories. He was loved and respected by his friends, and the many aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Lyons and Worford families.  Included is a special Aunt, Lila, who enjoyed his many childhood mischiefs.

                                                We cannot always understand,

Why things happen as they do,

But it is comforting to know,

God will take care of you.

It is the desire of the Lyons family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
