Retired Petty Officer First Class Willie Mitchell Obituary

On Friday, 83 years ago the Lord introduced Willie Anthony Mitchell to his earthly family and on Friday, 83 years later he introduced him to his heavenly family. Willie was born on February 28th 1936 in Portsmouth Virginia. He was the youngest of three children of the late LeRoy and Evelyn Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his brother LeRoy Mitchell Jr. and his sister Alethia McDonald.

Willie was a graduate of our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Portsmouth Virginia. Shortly after graduating from high school he enlisted in the Navy and severed his country for 20 years as a devoted seaman. During his military service he met the love of his life, Cynthia L. After retiring from the military, Willie worked for the Secret Service assigned to the White House. As prestigious as it was to work for the Secret Service, Willie was a man of financial wisdom. Which led him to take a position with the Postal Service, offering him an better pay and the opportunity to enjoy his favorite pass times, watching sports and working in his yard. As Willie said, “the Secret Service was to secret for me.” He worked for the Postal Service for 30 years.

Willie was a member of Clinton Cristian Assembly for 26 years where he served as a trustee and usher. Upon moving to Hampton, Virginia with his wife he attended Breakthrough Worship Center where he was a faithful member of the Men’s Fellowship.

Willie leaves behind to cherish his loving memory his wife Cynthia Mitchell; five children, Cedric Mitchell Sr, Michael Mitchell, Michelle Hairston, Marsha Mitchell, Millicent Mitchell; his son-in-law James Hairston and daughter-in-law Cicely Mitchell; thirteen grandchildren, Ester-Leigh Rawson, James Hairston III, Lakita Stephens, Cynthia Hairston, Cheyla Mason, Cedric Mitchell Jr, Isaiah Anderson, Jonae Peoples, Travis Anderson, Troy Anderson, Michael Mitchell(Lil Mike), Tavari Merriman, and Taylor Smith; eleven great-grandchildren; two sister in-laws, four brother in-laws, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
