Ms. Tonya Denise Griffin

Ms.Tonya Denise Griffin was born into this life on October 28th, 1982 to her mother Phyllis Griffin and her father Kelvin Porch in Hampton, Virginia. She accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age while at True Deliverance and Praise Ministries. She later became a member of Philippi Missionary Baptist Church where she served in various capacities including on the choir, praise and worship team, and women’s ministry. Tonya loved the Lord and maintained a relationship with Him throughout her life. She was known for connecting with others in non-judgmental ways and praying with those God put in her path.

Tonya earned her GED from Y.H. Thomas Community Center. Tonya went on to earn her bachelors from West Virginia State University, where she graduated Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Criminal Justice. Tonya had a strong work ethic and was known for giving her all wherever she worked. She had several jobs that she always worked to the best of her ability. When she worked at GNC she became a health nut and encouraged all her friends and family to make spinach a regular part of their diet. When she worked at Subway she was a ‘sandwich artist’. She truly believed in giving her all to her craft. Throughout her life, Tonya had a love for animals. Her family affectionately called her Dr. Doolittle. She also loved children and showered youth around her with love and encouragement.

Her pride and joy in this life was her daughter Rudy Alice Miriah Grayson. Tonya departed this life on January 31, 2018. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Devine Salim Griffin. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Rudy Alice Miriah Grayson; her mother Phyllis Griffin, her father Kelvin Porch; her sisters Quola Griffin and Latasha Walton, her brothers Kelvin Griffin and Terrell Porch; her nieces and nephews James Hardy, Iyanna Griffin, Keyanna Griffin, Imagane Jackson, Ishmiel Jackson, Quanique Griffin, and Jacobi Griffin; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A  celebration of Tonya life will be held on Thursday February 8, 2018.  Viewing will be 9:00-10:00am; and service will begin at 10:00am at Family Light Baptist Church 1030 44th street, Newport News, VA 23607.

Interment will follow at Greenlawn  Memorial Park.
