Mrs. Velma Richardson- Smith Obituary

 

Mrs. Velma Richardson Smith (Bonnie, Saphire, Carolina, Brick) suddenly transitioned on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Sentara Careplex.  She was born June 30, 1946 in Halifax County, North Carolina to the late Levy and Elizabeth Richardson.  Velma graduated from Eastman High School in 1964 and married the late Richard Smith and to their union, four children were born. 

 

She relocated to Newport News, VA and began working at Frosty Seafood until she obtained a position with Newport News Public Schools in 1974.  During her 35 years in education, she touched many lives while working at Briarfield, Booker T. Washington., Carver and Newsome Park Elementary Schools.  In addition, she was employed by McDonald’s and Newport News Parks and Recreation where she continued to touch the lives of families.She was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church. 

 

She retired in 2009.  Velma enjoyed family time, talking, reading, cross word puzzles, watching sports (especially the New York Giants and Duke Blue Devils) and reality judge and game shows. 

 

Faithful, loving and giving are a few attributes of her character.  Velma loved everyone but had a special love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved God, her Pastor, her family, Church family and neighbors.  There was never a dull moment in the presence of Velma. Whether it was words of encouragement, laughter or just allowing you to express yourself.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Elder Sharon A. Smith, Richard D. Smith, Kimberly Allmond and Tiffanie Smith; five grandchildren, Rashard Smith, Kenisha Washington, Tichira Smith, Tionna Smith and Cameron Simms; three great-grandchildren, Nadia Smith, Jayden & Jordan Washington; five siblings, Betty McWilliams, Bishop Elton Richardson, Jeanette Williams (Wilson), Carmilla Johnson (Lynn), Carl Richardson (Janice) and Phyllis Levisy (Shirtney); goddaughter, Lisa Johnson; a special Mother in Christ, Mother Daggs several loving in-laws, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Sibling preceding her in death, Alma Richardson.  

 

Services will be held noon Saturday, February 9, 2019 at New Hope Baptist Church 1415 Big Bethel Rd. Hampton, VA. by Dr. Christopher C. Carter Sr., 

 

Entombment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.

 

A viewing for Mrs. Smith will be held from noon until 5:00p.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 at C.C.Carter Funeral Home, Inc.

 

It is the desire of the Smith family that you keep them in your thouhts and prayers.
