Mrs. Sonia Howard-Burke

Mrs. Sonia Howard-Burke, 58, transitioned peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018 in Hampton, Virginia following an extended illness. Her loving husband Ervin Burke was by her side.

Sonia was a devoted wife, dedicated business partner with her husband, and caring family member and friend.Sonia was born in Newport News, Va to the late John Alexander and Lois Ina Howard. She attended Ferguson High and Radford University. Sonia was employed for 20 years by the Hampton School System as an Instructional Assistant.

She also worked for the Hampton-Newport News Community Service Board as a Support Specialist. Sonia was an advocate for the disabled, a mentor to various young people, and avid communicator.

Sonia is survived by her husband of 16 years Ervin Burke; three brothers, Harry Lee Howard (Brenda), Desi Howard (Brenda), Victor Howard (Sheena); and two sisters, Richettia Davis (Ronnie) and Jewel Howard. Her memory will also be cherished by a large host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and faithful friends. Sonia was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Howard, and three brothers: Myrl Howard, Frankie Howard, and J. Michael Howard.

A service celebrating the life of Sonia Howard-Burke will be held 11 A.M., Saturday, May 19, 2018 at New Hope Baptist Church 1415 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, VA with Dr. Christopher Carter officiating.

Interment will follow at Hampton memorial Gardens.

A viewing will be available from 9am to 11am on Saturday prior to the service. 

Mr. Ervin Burke would like to express his sincere thanks to all of the relatives, friends, and caregiving professionals who have been devoted to assisting with his wife’s health and welfare throughout the years. Sonia was always surrounded by an abundance of love.

It is the desire of the Burke family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
