Pauline Hamiel Percell died on August 1, 2019 at Del Sol Hospital in El Paso, Texas.
She was born on January 6, 1934 to the late Ekie Hamiel and Cleopatra Summerville in Halifax, North Carolina. She attended Newport News Public Schools and graduated from George Washington Carver High School Class of 1953.
She married the late Clyde Percell and from this union two daughters were born; Charlotte Denise and Anita Lynne.
She attended Thomas Nelson Community College to be a Dental Assistant and was employed at Newport News Health Center. She later worked as a housekeeper for Hampton General Hospital.
She accepted Jesus Christ at 12 years old at New Grafton Baptist Church where she was a member for over 50 years. She later became a member of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple where she served as a Greeter on the Hospitality Ministry until her health began to decline.
She was affectionately referred to as Blanche of The Golden Girls because she lived her life “like it was golden.” She loved life and “life didn’t owe her a dang thing.”
She was preceded in death by her parents Ekie and Cleopatra Hamiel, husband Clyde Percell; daughter Charlotte Percell-Swann; sisters Mary Knox and Queen Cooper; brothers Fred and Jasper Hamiel; nephew James Hamiel; niece Gloria Hamiel; and sons-in-law John Harvell and Tommy Swann.
She leaves to cherish her memories and her legacy of life, laugher and love, one sister Kathleen Bennett; one daughter, Anita Harvell; four grandchildren Yulanda Slade (Kevin); Tuwana Percell; Eric and Jayla Harvell; four nieces Deborah Knox, Tonya Hamiel, Angela Robinson (Larry) and Jacqueline Cooper; one nephew Lonnie Cooper (Marsha); one daughter-in-love Ellen “Jackie” Byrd, and a host of other great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service followed by inurnment will be held 12:00 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2019 at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road Suffolk, VA.
Repast immediately following at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, 3100 Butternut Drive, Hampton, VA.
