Mary Watson Whitaker was escorted by an angel on July 29, 2019 to her heavenly home at the blessed age of 87. She went from labor to eternal rest peacefully. She was born on September 24, 1931 to the late Joe Watson and Nancy Savage Watson in Scotland Neck, NC. Mary grew up being referred to as “Mae” and it still follows her today. In 1986, she gave her life to the Lord Jesus and joined New Hope Baptist Church where she was baptized. She later joined First Baptist Church Denbigh and attended as much as she could until her health challenges.
Mary became a wife and mother while in NC. Her family moved to Virginia in 1955 for better opportunities. Her children came first no matter what and everyone knew it. She commanded her children to respect adults and authority; however, she also commanded other adults and authority figures to treat her children fairly and with respect. She was gifted to work with her hands. Cooking gave her joy. Her family and neighbors claimed her to be the best cook on this side of heaven when it came to fried chicken, barbeque, sweet potato pies, potato salad, and coconut cake. Cleaning and “doing hair” were also favorite things to do. In her 80s, she still used the straightening comb to press her hair. Mary worked hard and instilled a strong work ethic in her children. In 1993, she retired from Riverside Health Center. Spending time with family was by far the most important thing in her life.
Mary had a serious personality and was a no-nonsense matriarch. But every chance she got, she presented an infectious smile and hearty laugh that drew you to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Whitaker, Sr., three children (Louis, Jimmy and Lendora), and all siblings (Jake, Willie, Sam, Joseph Jr., Thomas, Frances, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Lucille). She leaves to cherish her memories seven children (George Jr., Robert, Carlos, Diann, Denise (Frank), Anthony, and Eugene (Angela)), 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 [KJV]
