Mrs. Christobel Baptiste Obituary

Mrs. Christabel Naomi Baptiste departed this life on Saturday, February 3, 2018.  She was born in Bolans Village, Antigua, West Indies on March 17, 1920 to Daniel Alexander Farquhar and Susana Elizabeth Farquhar.  Christabel grew up and was educated in Antigua.

She worked on the island for many years before migrating to the United States.  She lived in New York City, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and most recently Hampton, Virginia.

Christabel was married to David Baptiste.  She had five children, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.  She enjoyed family, church, and work.  “At the age of 97, she was the oldest member of Shiloh (Seventh Day Adventist, St. Thomas, VI) and was present at church every Sabbath until she relocated” to Virginia after Hurricane Irma in 2017.

She was an amazing family historian who vividly recounted what life was like growing up with her fourteen siblings, reciting the poems and singing the songs she learned in elementary school.  Until the very end, you could hear her singing the hymns she learned as a child.

Christabel was preceded in death by her parents Daniel Alexander and Susana Elizabeth Farquhar; husband David Baptiste; children Olga Ross and David Simon; grandchildren Deon Baptiste and Michael Simon; siblings Mary Farquhar, Martha Farquhar, Mildred Farquhar, Katherine Edwards, Magdalene Morgan, Oscar Farquhar, Juliana Farquhar, Felix Farquhar, David Farquhar, George Farquhar, and Herbert Farquhar.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Elaine Witten (Eugene); sons Novelle Dickenson (Aphama) and Steven Erskine; grandchildren Allison West, Angie West, Omar Dickenson, Sharifa Dickenson, Andrew Dickenson, Leslie Creekmur, Denise Riley, and Brian Simon; five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; siblings Samuel Farquhar, Mabel Farquhar and Sarah Farquhar; daughter-in-law Eloise Simon; many nieces and nephews; special niece-in-law Romanita Farquhar; and all her special friends in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Christabel will forever be remembered for her kindheartedness and her firm belief that God is able and we need to put our trust in Him. “May her rest be peaceful until the call of the trumpet.”
