Mrs. Barbara Hayward Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Hayward mother of Ms. Regina Hayward transitioned peacefully at her home in Newport News, VA. on Friday, March 29, 2019

Barbara Ann Hudgins was born at Harlem Hospital to the parents of Emery Q. Hudgins and Betty L. Hudgins Cross on May 28th, 1940.  She  was later reared by Austin Cross, affectionately known as  (Da/Dee) and Betty (Mummy/Nana) at their family home beginning April 1943.

Barbara was raised with her five other siblings in Harlem, NY, oldest brother Emery (Jr.)  - older sister Estelle,  recently deceased in February of this year, RIP –  Her younger brother Ronald, RIP and younger sister Brenda who passed in infancy. Later she became the care taker and eventually the big sister of Vincent beginning in September 1958.

Barbara attended Grammar School at P. S. 186 beginning 1940 until 1946.  Afterwards, she became a student at Edward W. Stitt Middle School from 1946 until 1949 and then completed her education at Central Commercial High School 1949 until 1953 majoring in Bookkeeping and Shorthand.

Barbara met and married John in March 1965, four years later giving birth to her “pride and joy” Regina (Gina/”Scooter”) D. Hayward  in August of 1969.

In the late 1950’s Barbara began working at Harlem Hospital which launched her into several progressive career experiences within the medical administration profession. She enjoyed every experience and just as important she enjoyed her colleagues, some  who eventually became life-long friends. Later in the early ‘70s she began working at Addiction Research & Treatment Corporation (ARTC), which was a Methadone Clinic before beginning a new career at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in the late 1970’s.

Throughout her various time at the hospital she worked in several different departments including OB/GYN, Orthopedic Clinic, Eye Clinic and Central Registration upon up until her retirement in May 2001.  During her time, Barbara never met any strangers and built long-lasting relationships not only with her co-workers but also with customers and hospital patients as well.

Her daughter, Regina says that her mom “was  the BEST mother that a child could ever have”.  Barbara was a very patient &  loving mother, sister, and friend.  She had many friends and colleagues and was known for often providing those who asked, and sometimes those who didn’t ask with great advice.  She was comical, generous, loving to many, very supportive, had a big heart.

Barbara will truly be missed and always loved by many including her four nephews; three nieces; several great nephews and nieces; and a few great-great nephews and nieces.   She went home to be with our amazing Austin, Betty, Ronald, Estelle, and Brenda. She has left us to carry on.

Rest easy until we all meet again, your beloved family.
