Mr. Walter "Bug" Gilliam, 67, loving husband, father, brother and uncle, who transitioned this life after his courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, September 26, 2019.
Born in Hampton, Virginia he was the son of the late Walter and Nancy Milo Gilliam. He was preceded in death by his siblings Anthony "Tony" Gilliam, Lender "Fred" Gilliam and Gail Gilliam.
Walter served our country for five years in the United States Army as a member of the 59th Calvary Terrace Brigade, achieving rank of E-4.
Walter served in the Vietnam War, during his military career he received numerouse accolades such as the National Defense Medal of Honor as well as Honorable Discharge. Following his military career, Walter began employment at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company as a welder.
Walter was a strong man not only in statue but also in character, he had a powerful commanding voice. He was an avid reader, he also enjoyed watching westerns, body building and riding is Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was always helping others, as well as a mentor to many.
He leaves to cherish his momories , wife Ruby Eley Gilliam and daughter Teisha J. Gilliam, sisters Nancy Whitaker, Clara Marshall and Charlene Gilliam, brothers Thomas and Milo Gilliam.
A viewing for Mr. Gilliam will be held from noon until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
The family will receive guest from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
Services will be held noon Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Dunamis Christian Center, 6148 Jefferson Ave Newport New, Virginia.
Interment with military honors will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
A repast will follow interment at Elegant by the Bay, 1312 Chesapeske Ave, Hampton, Virginia.
