Mr. James “Coby” White, Jr. went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2018, at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife and seven of his siblings. He was born January 3, 1921, in Buckhorn, NC, the 5th of nine children born to Lula Holliman White and James Goldious White. He attended Dudley Grammar School and Dillard High School in Goldsboro, NC. “Coby,” as he was so affectionately called by all who knew him, left high school to farm the fields with his Dad, which laid the groundwork for his hard work ethic.
On January 21, 1944, he joined the United States Army, he served for 8 years. As a World War II veteran deployed to Barnstadt, Germany, his military service was an electrician. After an honorable discharge, Coby began his career as a rigger at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Virginia. He was a hardworking man sometimes working 12+ hours at the shipyard. During those years, he also worked part time for the Hampton City School system as a custodian, with the last few years at Aberdeen Elementary School. After over three decades with the shipyard and the school system, Coby finally retired for good.
Coby married the love of his life, Doris Mann Outlaw (Cat) on April 6, 1967 and together they raised and nurtured five children; Joseph, Arnold, Kathy, Shane and John. Cat and Coby had a love that was a joy to witness even when they called each other many funny names and expressions. Recently, he was happy that God chose to reunite him with his firstborn daughter Luzia from Auerbach, Germany. He was a man that firmly believed in the love of family which he demonstrated to all who knew him.
Coby had a witty way with words, always making those around him laugh and smile. He was a friend, father and grandfather to the countless children cared for in his home with Cat. Being a man of deep faith, he attended and served as a Trustee at Little Zion Baptist Church for many years. Later he joined his wife and became a member of Emmanuel Grace Baptist Church. He worked hard but he played hard as well. His favorite hobbies included gardening, fishing and hunting and he was always willing to share the fruits of these hobbies with others.
James “Coby” White, Jr. will forever be missed by two daughters Luzia Hanke(Gunter); Kathy Fladger(Arthur); four sons, Joseph Outlaw, Arnold Outlaw(Margaret), Shane White(Yevetta), John White(Iris); sister, Elizabeth Arrington; 28 grand children; six great-grandchildren and numerous family and friends. Servcies for Mr. White will be held 11:00a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018 at New Hope Baptist Church. Hamptn, VA. by Pastor Bradley.
Interment with military honors will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
Viewing for Mr. White will be held from noon until 6:00p.m. Friday July, 13, 2018 at C.C.Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
