Mr. Adrian " Awe" Lyles Obituary

We are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8 (ASV)

On Saturday, August 24, 2019, an angel was dispatched to Riverside Hospital to take the hand of Adrian Lorenzo “Awe” Bell – Lyles and ushered him into his eternal home.  Adrian was the third oldest of eight children, born on November 14, 1962 to Barbara Bell – Mock and the late Artis Lee Lyles. Adrian gained his formative education through Hampton Public Schools.

Adrian gave his life to Christ at an early age at Galilee Baptist Church.  After experiencing life trials and adversities, he rededicated his life back to Christ and joined Ivy Baptist Church on August 24, 2008. He was a kindhearted person who didn’t mind helping anyone, never met a stranger and overall just a GREAT guy.

Adrian had a passion for sports, so much so that he dedicated the last 9+ years to coaching recreational football and basketball for the Northampton Bruins.  He was more than just a coach to the team; he was a mentor, father and even a grandfather figure in every child’s life. Their families embraced him with open arms, and he did the same to them.  He just had a big heart and wanted every child to have the opportunity to play sports, even if they weren't financially able. What he taught those boys went far beyond the game, making him a sought-after coach. He was also an avid enthusiast of “THE DALLAS COWBOYS.”

Most importantly, Adrian loved his family and friends with all his heart especially his grandchildren. He worked tirelessly as a skilled masonry and carpenter until the day of his illness. He was a master craftsman able to use any tool designed to fashion metal, wood, brick or cement.

Adrian was preceded in death by his son ~ Adrian Lyles; father ~ Artis Lyles; grandparents ~ Mack and Hattie Lyles; sister ~ Angela Mock: aunts ~ Betty Lyles, Sandra Roberts, Virginia “Sister” Phillips, Joann Brown and Mary Frink; uncles ~ Johnny Bell, Theodore Phillips and George Brown; nephew ~ Clyde “CJ” F. Spivey; cousins James “JJ” Phillips, Tyrone Frink, Shawn Pittman and Anthony “Ant – Ant” Bell.

He leaves to cherish his memories: spouse ~ Evette Cathy Lyles; seven children ~ Anthony Richardson (Ivonna) Enterprise, AL; Shameka Lewis (Steve) Hampton, VA; Latoya and Devin Lyles of  Charleston, SC;  Indayah, Ayana, and Tyji Lyles all of Hampton, VA; mother ~ Barbara Bell-Mock; siblings ~Terrence Bell, Valerie Bell, Felicia Bunn, Lawrence “Vernon” Bell (Angela), Patrice Bell, Delano Bell, Jermaine Mock, Tina Mock, Robin Mock, Valerie Mock and Lawrence “LT” Mock; one aunt ~ Phyllis Pittman and one uncle ~ George Frink, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
