Bishop Herman Lee Sessoms went to his rest with the Lord on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, following a sudden illness. He slipped away peacefully surrounded by his wife and loving family. He worked in the Waterworks Department for the City of Newport News, retiring after 30 years of service.
Lee became a member of Ivy Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board for many years. As a Deacon at Friendship Baptist Church, he developed a deeper love for the Word of God and the gospel ministry, was called to preach and was ordained in 1996 by the late Rev. Willie J. Hilton. He later became the Founder and Pastor of New Shiloh Christian Church, and was ordained as Bishop in November 2003.
Most recently he transitioned to the ministry of Family Light Baptist Church under the leadership of Elder Donnette Mills where he continued to labor in the ministry and preach the Word.
Bishop Sessoms was predeceased by his daughter, Sylvia, and three brothers, Thomas, Arthur, and Vernon. He leaves to cherish his life and memories his loving wife, Winnie, six daughters: Mary Ann Chance (Billy), Shirley Newsome (David), Angela Diggs (Larry), Diane Dunn (Thomas), Delores Green, and Elaine Hinton (James), two sons, Jerry Harrell (Linda) and Alvin Sessoms; and one precious sister, Clara Brinkley. A host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, faith family and friends will also cherish special memories of times with Bishop Sessoms.
Viewing will be available from 12 – 5 p.m. on Friday, June 21, at C. C. Carter Funeral Home, 3400 Roanoke Avenue, Newport News.
A celebration service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 12:00 noon at Friendship Baptist Church, 1135 37th Street, Newport News.
Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
