1st Lady Lula Mae Henderson Peake, was born August 24, 1929 in Greenville, AL; to Lucille Carter and Willie Henderson. She was the third of nine children. Lula was educated in Greenville, AL and graduated from Greenville High School. Lula, loved the Lord and dedicated her life to Him as a young child. As a child she actively served the Lord by singing and serving in any capacity that she was needed.
After high school, Lula relocated to Knoxville, TN where she met and married, the late Reverend Dr. George B. Peake. From this union of 64 years two children were born Bonnie (deceased) and Rickie.
George and Lula relocated to New York. Excepting his call to the Gospel, Lula supported her husband together, with their children, both of her parents and her youngest sister. They founded and established The Garden of Eden Baptist Church. The first service was held on Sunday, March 26, 1967 (Easter Sunday); at its first location 134 Sumpter Street, Brooklyn, NY. They later moved to the current location 71 Pennsylvania Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Lula was faithful to the ministry. Singing was her passion. She would often lead the choir singing, “We’ve come this far by Faith”.
Lula valued education and cared about the well-being of people which led her to earning a nursing degree. She worked in the field of nursing for many years caring for her patients with compassion. She was employed at Queens General Hospital. She then decided to pursue another dream. She became a licensed cosmetologist. While working as a beautician, her heart continued to be in the medical field and helping others. She furthered her education and became a certified respiratory therapist. She worked as a respiratory therapist at Mercy Hospital until her retirement.
Lula wasn’t ashamed to praise the Lord. She is now rejoicing in heaven with her husband Dr. George B. Peake, her daughter, Bonnie Perry, her grandson, Reverend Lamon C. Perry and her sisters and brothers.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Reverend RickiePeake (Carol) of Newport News, VA, a sister, Annie LousieWyatt of Jamaica, NY, two sister in-laws, Jewel Henderson of Roosevelt, NY, and Pauline Peake of South Carolina, three brother-in-laws William Ryan Peake, Jimmie Peake (Barbara) both of South Carolina, and Howard Peake (Mary) of NY.
